The Suffering Savior: Atonement for Sin
Romans 5:6-10

I. The Suffering of Humanity (Romans 5:6a) “When we were yet without strength”
A. THE CONSEQUENCE OF SIN IS DEATH
1. Fatal Folly: Death is not just a physical phenomenon, but a spiritual one as well.
2. Fruitless Rebellion: Death is a result of Adam’s sin and humanity’s futile rebellion against
God.
B. THE EXTENT OF SIN’S DOMINION (Romans 5:6b) “Christ died for the ungodly”
1. Universal Reign: Sin has dominion over all humanity
2. Comprehensive Corruption: Sin’s power is universal, affecting every aspect of human life.
II. The Suffering of Christ (Romans 5:8a) “His love toward us”
A. VOLUNTARY SACRIFICE
1. Love-Led Sacrifice: Christ’s suffering was a voluntary act, motivated by his boundless love for
humanity.
2. Obedient Offering: Christ’s suffering was not a forced or coerced event, but rather a deliberate
act of worship and obedience to the Father.
B. REDEMPTIVE SUFFERING: (Romans 5:9a) “Justified By His Blood”
1. Blood-Redemption: Christ’s suffering was not in vain, but was the means of redemption
2. Justifying Justice: His blood was shed to justify us before God.
III. The Effect of Christ’s Suffering (Romans 5:9b) “We shall be saved from wrath”
A. JUSTIFICATION THROUGH CHRIST’S BLOOD
1. Favorable Forgiveness Found: Through Christ’s blood, we are justified and declared
righteous before God.
2. Radiant Righteousness Revealed: This justification is not based on our own efforts or
merits, but on Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection.
B. PERMANENT PEACE WITH GOD (V10) “Reconciled to God”… “Saved by His life”
1. Peaceful Reconciliation: As a result of our justification, we have peace with God.
2. Permanent Peace: This peace is not based on our own efforts or merits, but on Christ’s work
on the cross.
